Srinagar, Jan 23 (KNO): Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Akshay Labroo, on Friday urged people to report any distress caused by gusty winds sweeping the city. “If anyone is facing distress of any kind in any area and requires assistance from the Srinagar administration or the SMC, they may call or inform us immediately,” the DC, as reported by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said while speaking to the media persons here. The DC said that predictions of strong winds came true, affecting areas across the city, including Mehjoor Nagar, Karan Nagar and Boulevard. “In response, joint teams from SDRF, R&B, SMC and the District Police worked tirelessly night after night to clear roads and remove fallen debris,” he added. Labroo mentioned a recent medical emergency, where SDRF and District Police teams, together with the other departments, swiftly evacuated affected individuals and ensured they received timely medical care. “From the KPDCL’s side, 33 KV lines and their feeders were impacted due to the winds and preventive shutdowns. Rectification work has been ongoing vigorously since last night, with a major portion already completed,” he said. The DC added that by the end of the day, electricity restoration across the city would be mostly completed, barring a few exceptions. “While Srinagar did not witness significant snowfall, authorities remain prepared for snow clearance,” he said. He further noted that teams from MED, SMC and R&B, along with machinery, are fully deployed and ready to clear snow if required. Labroo said that where complaints arise, dewatering mobile pumps and teams are immediately dispatched to ensure proper drainage and minimise disruptions. “Fallen trees and branches are being removed promptly. People should inform the administration about any blocked roads, damaged rooftops, or other hazards,” he said. The DC recalled that between 10:30 and 11:30 pm last night, a weather advisory was issued as soon as strong winds were predicted. “Notifications were sent via multiple channels, including landlines, WhatsApp and district police control rooms, to ensure residents were informed in advance,” he said, adding that rooftops damaged by winds were prioritised for removal from roads, after which the materials will be returned to their owners. “Assessment work is ongoing to document the damage accurately,” he said. The DC said the administration remains fully committed to public safety, prompt restoration of services and swift response during inclement weather—(KNO)
